In 2005, Africa Mint has issued several commemorative coins dedicated to National Programs for athlets participating to the Olympic Games in Beijing (Peoples Republic of China) in 2008 as well as a National Program to fight against Malaria in Niger, remembrances of the visits of Pope John Paul II in Benin. The most "unusual commemorative" issued in 2005 at this moment is for sure the very first participation of our Mint to International Numismatic Fairs in the European Union and in Switzerland !

All coins of this program have a reasonably low mintage, only 1,200 or 2,005 pieces of each type !

At this moment, existing denominations in this 2005 programs are 1.500 CFA ("1 Africa") and 6.000 CFA ("4 Africa"). Like commemorative coins issued in several other countries prior to a new system (the "ECU", "Euro", the "Belga" in Belgium in the 1930's, etc.) a double denomination has been used. The "Africa" is a "psychological testing denomination" to invite non-using-CFA countries to join the sub-region currency system creating a new denomination (the "Africa") similar to the "Euro".
